It’s definitely worth a visit. I stopped by during my last trip in 2017 and did 4/5 chili and 4/5 sichuan to feel them out, knowing that I’d likely return to go devil on both during a later trip if they were good.

That chili level was enjoyable by my standards (enough to slow me down a little, but still finish without issue), and I’d put it roughly on par with a level 9 or 10 @ CoCo Curry. As for the sichuan level... I was not prepared. It was easily more than I had ever experienced in any dish I’d encountered previously in the U.S. It kind of turned the whole experience into somewhat of a novelty once my tongue eventually became fully inundated with the numbing effects of those peppers. Even water tasted funny afterwards.

As for the rest of the core ramen components, I’d put them at slightly above average or better (by Japan standards) with their pork being particularly outstanding. I think that a sichuan level of 3 or below would be best to enjoy the rest of the dish, but don’t let that stop you if you want to go on the full devil ride.

My only regret is that I didn’t spend more time in Tokyo, but then again I would’ve missed out in other places - my favourite ramen places were in Yokohama ( https://goo.gl/maps/n8cAvUj95Cy ) and Kyoto ( https://goo.gl/maps/KKYr6oJwTKx ); both had long lines, but we got to the Yokohama one early and there was a huge line when we left whereas the Kyoto one was over an hour wait (which was bearable since you could pop into the nearest convenience store and just have a couple of beers while you wait).

I guess I’ll have to add this to my list.

Those sichuan peppercorns are a thing you build up an immunity to. I lived in Beijing for a year and distinctly remember being knocked on my ass the first time i had something really spicy in that way. It was awesome.

However i eventually got used to them and when my mom came and visited me, she got knocked on her ass by some sichuan peppercorn dish that i would have considered pretty mild. My mom has a very high tolerance for spicy food so i was really surprised.

A year later we ate out at a sichuan restaurant in Vancouver BC that was quite authentic. Both of us weren’t able to take the level of spice there since, after coming home, neither of us were used to it anymore. Its actually pretty fascinating the degree to which you become used to them.

So cool that you’ve been there ... and we shall see how brave I am.
